March is National Nutrition Month

By March 1, 2018April 24th, 2018Personal Insurance

Many of us think of March as the first signs of spring with brighter days and warmer temperatures. This time of year offers a new opportunity to get our health and fitness back on track once spring brings new life. Since March is National Nutrition Month, we’ve compiled a list of some healthy foods that can help to keep your body at its best – inside and out. As always, please consult a doctor before altering your diet or starting a new fitness program.

Blueberries

Berries are great for your body! Eating just under a cup of mixed berries (raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, etc.) every day has shown to increase levels of ‘good’ HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure – two positives when it comes to heart health. While all berries are good, blueberries offer us something extra. They are packed with antioxidants that help prevent cancer, diabetes and age-related memory changes.

Kale

On top of delivering an abundance of cancer-fighting antioxidants, kale is one of the vegetable world’s top sources of vitamin A, which promotes eye and skin health and may help strengthen the immune system. It’s also a good source of fiber and vitamin C.

Oatmeal

Oats are packed with soluble fiber, which lowers the risk of heart disease. While you may be thinking that oats are loaded with carbs, the release of those sugars is slowed by the fiber, and because oats also have 10 grams of protein per ½ cup serving, they deliver steady, muscle-friendly energy.

Seeds

These are small but mighty sources of omega-3s. Flaxseeds, hemp seeds and chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and the fat in the seeds increases absorption of protective nutrients in vegetables eaten in the same meal.

Beans

All beans are good for your heart, but none can boost your brain power like black beans. They are full of anthocyanins, antioxidant compounds that have been shown to improve brain function. A daily ½ cup serving provides 8 grams of protein and 7.5 grams of fiber. Beans are also low in calories and free of unsaturated fat.
